Arizona to Oklahoma

Can a Corgi puppy get from Arizona to Oklahoma in a day?

Yes, comfortably. American and Southwest both fly nonstop from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Oklahoma City and to Tulsa, and either flight takes a little over two hours heading east. Driving is a different proposition: Casa Grande to Oklahoma City is about a thousand miles, mostly on I-40 across New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle, two long days on the road.

Oklahoma runs on Central time, an hour ahead of Arizona in winter and two hours ahead once daylight saving starts. A late morning departure from Phoenix reaches you mid-afternoon, which is pleasant in October and hard going under an August heat advisory, so the season shapes the flight more than the fare does. We plan the route with you once a puppy is reserved and quote the travel on its own; the delivery page has the details.

A flight nanny into OKC or Tulsa

Our flight nanny keeps the puppy in a carrier in the cabin, never in the hold, and hands it to you at the airport. Choose the airport by your side of the state: Tulsa for the northeast, Oklahoma City for the center, south and west.

Ground transport along I-40

The road trip to Oklahoma takes a USDA certified provider two to three days, and you get photos from the road. It works well for rural families, for whom an airport run is a long day in itself. Spring storms and winter ice are the usual reasons a run is paused or rescheduled.

Meeting us at Phoenix Sky Harbor

With nonstops in both directions, you can fly to Phoenix, meet us and the puppy at Sky Harbor, and fly home with your puppy under the seat. An early flight out and an afternoon flight back can make it a long day trip, though an overnight is gentler on everyone.

Collecting from our home

If you will be in Arizona anyway, for family, work or a winter break, you can collect from our home in Casa Grande, about an hour south of Sky Harbor. You see where your puppy was raised and leave with its records, food and written contract in hand.

Corgi life in Oklahoma

What does owning a Corgi look like across Oklahoma?

Pembrokes were bred in Wales to drive cattle by nipping at their heels, and Oklahoma is cattle country. That suits the breed's instincts and asks for some sense around livestock. The rest of the picture changes from one corner of the state to another.

Oklahoma City and the central metro

Summers are hot and humid, winters bring the odd ice storm, and spring brings the sirens. The paved trail around Lake Hefner is a popular loop for metro dog owners, and the breeze off the water helps on a warm evening. In newer suburbs, check HOA rules on fencing before you plan the yard.

Tulsa and Green Country

Northeast Oklahoma is greener, hillier and more wooded, which makes for lovely walks and good habitat for ticks and copperheads. Joe Station Dog Park on Charles Page Boulevard in west Tulsa is fenced for off-leash play, and the River Parks trails along the Arkansas River make long leashed walks easy.

Southwest Oklahoma

Around Lawton and the Wichita Mountains the country is drier and more open. Rattlesnakes, sandburs and red dirt are the daily realities: the burs work into a Corgi's coat and paws, and after a wet walk the white socks and chest come home rust-colored.

The Panhandle and the northwest

Out toward Woodward and Guymon, wind and distance shape life with a dog. Winters are colder and windier than in the rest of the state, and the nearest emergency vet can be a long drive away, so find it before you need it. A Corgi on a working farm out here will want a job.

Worth knowing

What do Oklahoma Corgi owners wish they had known sooner?

Tornado warnings and the safe room

A warning can give you only minutes. Keep a leash, a carrier, water and a little food in your shelter or safe room, and practice the trip there with the puppy on calm days. A frightened Corgi will wedge itself under a bed where you cannot reach it, and an ID tag matters if a storm scatters a household.

Ticks in tall grass

Oklahoma has several tick species that carry disease to dogs, and the wooded east has the most. A Corgi's low, dense coat hides a tick well, so after walks through tall grass, check ears, armpits and between the toes with your fingers, not just your eyes. Ask your vet which prevention suits your county.

Cows, horses and a herding instinct

A Corgi's instinct is to nip at the heels of stock, and on a farm a puppy will try it. One kick from a cow or horse can badly hurt a dog under 30 pounds, so keep the puppy out of pens and pastures until it reliably comes when called, and supervise it around livestock for life.

Ice storms and winter weight

When an ice storm shuts down walks for days, a Corgi stuck indoors gains weight quickly. Cut meals slightly when exercise drops, burn energy with short training sessions, and choose a pet-safe ice melt for your steps and driveway.

Through the seasons

What does a good Oklahoma routine look like for a Corgi?

Plan on about an hour of activity a day for an adult Corgi, split between walks and play, with the timing shifting through the year. From June to September that means early mornings and late evenings, because heat and humidity together are harder on a thick coat than dry heat. Spring and fall are the best seasons for long walks. Build a puppy's exercise up gradually, and use our puppy training guide for busy indoor days.

Expect a heavy shed in spring, when the winter undercoat lets go, and another in fall. An undercoat rake through those weeks keeps hair off the furniture and lets air reach the skin in muggy weather; our grooming guide shows how. Keep a towel by the door, too. A Corgi's low build collects mud, burs and dew from every walk, and a quick wipe of the belly and feet saves your floors.

Oklahoma questions

Questions from Oklahoma families

Should we fly into Oklahoma City or Tulsa?

Go by the drive home. Tulsa is the easier pick for the northeast, from Broken Arrow to Muskogee. Oklahoma City suits the center, the south and the west. Stillwater sits about an hour and a quarter from either airport, so there the choice comes down to which flight time fits your day. Both have nonstop service from Phoenix.

How long is the flight from Phoenix to Oklahoma?

A little over two hours on a nonstop, to either city. Remember the clock change: Oklahoma is an hour ahead of Arizona in winter and two hours ahead from March to early November, so a puppy that leaves Phoenix at ten in the morning in summer lands at about two in the afternoon your time.

Is a Corgi a good dog for an Oklahoma farm?

It can be, with sense. Pembrokes still carry a strong herding instinct, and many enjoy farm life. A pet puppy is not a trained stock dog, though, and its urge to nip heels can get it kicked. Keep it fenced or leashed around cattle and horses, teach a reliable recall, and let it be a family dog first.

Can a puppy travel to Oklahoma during storm season?

Yes, but keep the date flexible. Spring storms build fast here, and if severe weather lines up with travel day, the flight or the ground transport run is moved rather than risked. A backup date a few days later makes that painless. Morning flights help too, since Oklahoma storms tend to build in the afternoon and evening.
