The honest answer
Why Illinois is a flight,
not a drive.
About twenty-four hours of interstate, which is not a journey to put a nine-week-old through. The nonstop from Phoenix is roughly three and a quarter hours into either Chicago airport, and there are plenty of them.
The real question in Illinois is not whether to fly but where to land. Chicago has two airports and the difference between them is often half an hour of your life; for the bottom third of the state, St. Louis is closer than either.

For anyone south of Springfield this is usually the shorter day, and we will say so honestly rather than default to Chicago because it sounds right.

Two to three days by road, door to door, with updates as they go. Worth asking about if an airport is not how you want to spend the morning.

Illinois families out?
Assuming Chicago. A family in Marion or Carbondale is nearer to St. Louis than to Midway by a wide margin, and every year somebody books O’Hare and then drives five hours home. Give us the town and we will compare the two drives properly.
Then O’Hare itself in winter. It is one of the more delay-prone airports in the country between December and February, so we book mornings, which leaves room to rebuild the day if something slips rather than losing it.
Traffic is the quiet one. A landing that looks sensible on paper can put you on the Kennedy at half past four with a puppy who has had enough. We aim to have you driving out before the city starts heading home.
Settling in
What does the first
week look like?
The flight is short enough that most Illinois puppies arrive alert rather than flattened. Resist the urge to let the whole family meet them in the arrivals hall. Get home, let them find their feet in one room, then do introductions slowly.
Same food for the first week or two, and expect a lot of sleeping for the first few days. In winter, a puppy who has never seen snow will need short outings and a towel by the door.
