From Casa Grande to Iowa
How a puppy gets
to Iowa.
Our puppies are raised in Casa Grande, about an hour from Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). For Iowa families the usual airports are Des Moines (DSM) and Cedar Rapids (CID), with Omaha (OMA) as an option in western Iowa. A nonstop flight from Phoenix takes about three hours to Des Moines. By road it is about twenty-one hours to Des Moines.
Nonstop service from Phoenix to Iowa is thinner than to larger states and varies by season, so we look at the current schedules for your nearest airport before a puppy is reserved. Western Iowa families often find Omaha the easier airport.
Winter weather across the Plains can delay connecting flights, which is one more reason we prefer a nonstop or a flight nanny who stays with the puppy the whole way.

Settling in
What does the first
week look like?
A ground transport arrival is different from a flight: your puppy has had two or three days of gentle travel with regular stops rather than one sharp day. They usually arrive settled and hungry. Feed them their normal food, in their normal amount, and let the excitement wait an hour.
Keep the diet the same for a week or two, and give them a small space to begin with. Iowa winters mean a lot of indoor time early on, which is no bad thing for house training.
