Corgi puppies for sale
in Oregon.

Four Oregon airports have nonstop flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor, about an hour from our home in Casa Grande, Arizona, where we raise Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Here is how a puppy gets to you, and what changes for a desert-raised Corgi among Oregon's rain, beaches and rivers.

Arizona to Oregon

What is the best way to bring a Corgi puppy home to Oregon?

Usually a single nonstop flight. Alaska, American, Southwest and Sun Country all fly from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Portland, about two and three-quarter hours in the air, and American also flies nonstop to Eugene, Medford and Redmond, the airport for Bend. Those smaller routes have only a flight or two a day, so they need booking further ahead.

Driving is a lot to ask. Casa Grande to Portland is well over a thousand miles, two long days, and ground transport is the way to cover that by road. Oregon keeps Pacific time with daylight saving, apart from most of Malheur County, so your clock matches ours from March to early November and runs an hour behind in winter. We settle the route after you reserve and send a separate travel quote; our delivery page covers each option.

A flight nanny into Portland

With a flight nanny, the puppy rides in the cabin, not the hold, and is handed to you at PDX. Portland has the most flights from Phoenix, so it is the easiest landing to time around the weather and your drive home.

Into Eugene, Medford or Redmond

For the south valley, the Rogue Valley or Central Oregon, a flight nanny into your local airport can save hours of driving, especially in winter when the Cascade passes are snowy. Fewer flights mean less flexibility, so dates are set further ahead.

Ground transport up the West Coast

Two to three days is typical for a USDA certified ground transport provider to bring a puppy north, with photo updates en route. Coming up I-5 means crossing the Siskiyou Summit, which can see snow in winter, and a storm there means the run is paused or rescheduled.

Flying to Phoenix to collect

If you want to make the handoff yourself, fly down to Phoenix Sky Harbor, where we bring the puppy to meet you, then fly back to Oregon with it in a carrier at your feet. Portland has several daily nonstops back, which leaves room to choose a sensible return time.

Corgi life in Oregon

How does Corgi life change from the Willamette Valley to the high desert?

The mild, damp west of Oregon suits a Corgi's coat, the dry east brings snow and sharp grasses, and the coast has rules and hazards of its own. A puppy raised in our desert adjusts to all of it, given a little help.

Portland and the Willamette Valley

Rain defines fall through spring, and a Corgi's low belly finds every puddle. Thousand Acres, the Sandy River Delta near Troutdale, is a huge off-leash area along the river, and very muddy after rain, so keep towels in the car. Many older homes have steep stairs, which a young Corgi should be carried on.

The coast

Many Oregon beaches welcome dogs, but from March 15 to September 15 snowy plover nesting areas are closed to dogs, even on a leash. Sneaker waves can knock down an adult, let alone a 25-pound dog, so keep your Corgi well back from the surf, and rinse off salt and sand afterward.

Bend and Central Oregon

The high desert is sunny and dry, with real snow in winter and cheatgrass on the trails by summer. Snow on short legs means shoveled paths and shorter outings for a puppy. The drive from Portland crosses the Cascades on US-26 or US-20, so in winter Redmond is usually the better landing.

Southern Oregon

Medford and the Rogue Valley have hot, dry summers, with foxtails in the fields and rattlesnakes on the hillsides. Late summer often brings wildfire smoke, and on poor air days a Corgi's walk should shrink to a short loop. Winters are mild in the valley but snowy over the Siskiyous.

Worth knowing

What catches Oregon Corgi owners out?

Salmon poisoning disease

West of the Cascades, raw salmon, trout and steelhead can carry a parasite that causes salmon poisoning disease in dogs, which can be fatal without treatment. Keep your Corgi away from fish carcasses on riverbanks and from raw fish scraps, and tell your vet right away if your dog ate any, since signs can take days to appear.

Puppies who refuse to go out in the rain

A puppy from the Arizona desert has never felt steady rain, and many simply refuse to squat in it, then go on the rug. Give the puppy a covered spot near the door, go out with it under an umbrella, and praise lavishly. House training in November takes more patience than in June.

A coat that stays damp

A Corgi's thick undercoat can hold moisture for hours after a wet walk, and skin that stays damp can get irritated. Towel right down to the skin after rainy outings, use a dryer on a cool setting after a soaking, and brush out loose undercoat so air can reach the skin.

Ice storms in the valley

Some winters, freezing rain coats Portland and the Willamette Valley and the region grinds to a halt for days. Short legs slip easily on ice, so stock a pet-safe ice melt, keep outings to the yard, and swap walks for indoor training until it thaws.

Day to day

How do Oregon's wet months change daily life with a Corgi?

Cool weather suits a Corgi's energy, and for much of the year an Oregon dog can walk at any hour. An adult needs daily exercise and something to think about: herding games, tricks, a sniff walk through a new park. The risk is the long gray winter. When rain cuts walks short, measure meals and add indoor training, because Corgis gain weight easily and extra pounds strain a long back. Our Corgi care guide covers daily needs.

Shedding never really stops, and a mild climate does not change that. Brush two or three times a week, more during the spring and fall blowouts; our grooming guide shows how. In summer, east of the Cascades and in the Rogue Valley, walk early and check for foxtails and cheatgrass after every outing. On the coast, a quick freshwater rinse keeps salt from drying out the coat.

Oregon questions

Questions from
Oregon families

Is Portland the only Oregon airport with a nonstop from Phoenix?

No. American flies nonstop from Phoenix to Eugene, Medford and Redmond as well as Portland, and Portland is also served by Alaska, Southwest and Sun Country. The smaller airports have only a flight or two a day, so they suit families with some flexibility on dates. Portland offers the widest choice of times.

How does a Corgi cope with Oregon rain?

Well, once it gets used to it. The double coat sheds light rain, and Corgis come from Wales, so damp weather is in their history. The adjustment is behavioral: a desert puppy may refuse to go out in the wet at first. A covered potty spot, a towel by the door and some patience through the first rainy season make the difference.

Can a puppy fly to Bend in winter?

Yes, and flying into Redmond is usually a better winter plan than landing in Portland and crossing the Cascades. Redmond is about twenty minutes from Bend. If snow or ice is forecast at either end, the trip is moved. Have a warm car ready, and expect snow to be a brand-new experience for your Arizona puppy.

Is driving to Arizona for the puppy realistic from Oregon?

You can, but from Portland it is well over a thousand miles each way, two long days in each direction. Flying to Phoenix and back with the puppy in the cabin gives you the same in-person handoff without the miles. If you would rather avoid airports entirely, ground transport brings the puppy north in about two to three days.
