Corgi puppies for sale
in Michigan.

We raise Pembroke Welsh Corgis in our family home in Casa Grande, Arizona, and most Michigan puppies come home on a nonstop into Detroit Metro with a flight nanny. Here is how that trip works, and what a short-legged herding dog makes of a Michigan winter.

Arizona to Michigan

How does a Corgi puppy get from Arizona to Michigan?

By air. Driving from our door to Detroit is close to 2,000 miles and about thirty hours behind the wheel, far too long for a puppy who has just turned eight weeks. The nonstop from Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) to Detroit Metro (DTW) takes a little under four hours, and several airlines fly it, so there is usually a choice of times. Grand Rapids (GRR) has a seasonal American nonstop that does not run all year. Travel is quoted separately from what a puppy costs, and our delivery page explains each option.

Watch the clock too. Arizona keeps Mountain Standard Time all year, so Michigan is three hours ahead of us from March to early November and two hours ahead in winter. A puppy that leaves Phoenix after breakfast lands in Detroit mid-afternoon, and with December sunsets around five, an early departure gets you home in daylight. Four Upper Peninsula counties on the Wisconsin line keep Central time.

Flight nanny into Detroit Metro

This is the plan for most of the Lower Peninsula. A flight nanny we trust keeps your puppy in a carrier at their feet in the cabin, never in the cargo hold, and hands it to you at DTW the same day it leaves Arizona.

Grand Rapids when the seasonal nonstop runs

In the months American flies Phoenix to Grand Rapids, landing at GRR saves a west Michigan family over two hours on I-96. Outside those months the choice is a Detroit landing and a drive, or a connection, and we compare the two for your town.

Ground transport for the U.P. and the far north

USDA certified drivers bring the puppy by road over two to three days, with photo updates on the way. For a family in Marquette or Sault Ste. Marie, delivery to the door can beat a connecting flight and hours in the car. In winter we pause or reschedule whenever the roads are not safe.

Collect in Arizona

If you spend part of the winter in Arizona, pick up in Casa Grande. Or fly in to Phoenix Sky Harbor and we will bring the puppy to the airport, so you can take it home yourself.

Drive times

How far is Detroit Metro from your part of Michigan?

DTW is in Romulus, southwest of Detroit, which puts it nearer Ann Arbor than downtown. These are rough times with clear roads and no rush hour. Lake-effect snow on I-96 or US-131 can add an hour or more in winter.

Corgi life in Michigan

What is Corgi life like in each part of Michigan?

A Pembroke stands only ten to twelve inches at the shoulder and wears a dense double coat. In Michigan the coat shrugs off the cold; the legs are the problem once the snow piles up.

Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor

Most Corgis here live in subdivisions with a yard, so winter walks are the real job. Sidewalks are salted from November into March, and the brine coats a Corgi's low belly as well as its paws, so keep a towel by the door. Humid July afternoons push the long walk to the evening.

Grand Rapids and the Lake Michigan shore

West Michigan takes the brunt of the lake-effect snow, and a fresh foot of it is deeper than your Corgi is tall, so shovel a path to a patch of grass. Michigan state parks welcome dogs on a leash of six feet or less, though not on designated swim beaches. Blacklegged ticks carrying Lyme disease have spread north along this coast, so check the coat after every dune walk.

Up North and the Traverse City area

Cottage weekends mean docks, boats and deep, cold lakes. Plenty of Corgis love to wade, but short legs make swimming hard work, so a dog life jacket on the boat is cheap insurance. Porcupines live in these woods, and a herding dog that tries to move one comes home with a muzzle full of quills.

The Upper Peninsula

Snow here is measured in feet and the drives between towns are long, so find your vet before the puppy arrives. An eight-week-old has only puppy fluff, so its first outings last a few minutes. The state health department counts much of the western U.P. as a known Lyme area, which makes tick prevention a first-week conversation with your vet.

Worth knowing

What catches Michigan Corgi owners out?

Two separate terminals at Detroit Metro

Delta and its partners use the McNamara Terminal, most other airlines use the Evans Terminal, and the two sit at opposite ends of the airport. Park at the wrong one and you will spend the handoff hunting for the right garage, so check the terminal again that morning.

Salt brine on a low-slung dog

A Corgi's chest rides only a few inches above the slush, so road salt and chemical de-icer end up on the belly and between the toes, and the dog licks it off. Wipe or rinse after winter walks, use a pet-safe ice melt on your own steps, and look for cracked pads.

Winter weight gain

Corgis are food-motivated and put on weight easily, and a Michigan winter of short gray days and icy sidewalks quietly cuts walks in half. The lean puppy of November can be round by March. Replace lost walks with indoor fetch, training games and food puzzles.

A county dog license by four months

Michigan requires every dog four months or older to be licensed through the county, and you need a current rabies certificate from a vet to buy the license. Ask about the rabies shot at the first vet visit so the license is not late.

Living with a Corgi

How do you keep a Corgi fit and comfortable through a Michigan year?

A grown Pembroke wants two real walks a day plus something for its brain: training, a herding ball, a sniff around a new trail. Michigan makes that easy from May to October. The test is keeping the routine when it is 15 degrees and dark by five. A first winter of short outings and plenty of training suits a young puppy well. Our Corgi puppy training guide has games that work in a living room.

The double coat is built for this climate. It sheds a little all year and a lot twice a year, in spring and again in fall, and a Michigan spring shed fills a vacuum fast. Brush a few times a week, daily during a shed, and never shave the coat for summer, because it insulates against heat as well as cold. In July, walk early or late and keep water out. The Corgi grooming guide covers the tools.

Michigan questions

Questions from Michigan families

Can a puppy fly from Arizona to Michigan in the middle of winter?

Yes. The puppy travels in the cabin with a flight nanny, so the cold only matters for the minutes between the terminal and your car. Warm the car first and bring a blanket for the carrier. What can change the plan is a storm on your side: if the drive home from DTW looks unsafe, we move the date.

Is a Corgi a good dog for Michigan snow?

Most adults love it. The coat handles cold well, and a Corgi will happily plow through a few inches. Deep, fresh lake-effect snow is another matter for a dog this short, so keep a shoveled potty patch and a cleared walking loop, and give a puppy from the desert a few weeks to decide winter is fun.

We live near Grand Rapids. Should we wait for the Grand Rapids nonstop?

Only if the timing lines up. Our puppies go home at eight weeks on a first come, first served basis, and the Grand Rapids nonstop does not run every month. When it is not flying, landing at Detroit and driving a little over two hours home is usually a shorter day than a connection. Tell us your town and we will compare both.

When does ground transport make more sense than a flight to Michigan?

Mostly in the Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula, where even a nonstop into Detroit leaves four or more hours of driving. A USDA certified provider brings the puppy to your door over two to three days, with photo updates along the way. It is planned once a puppy is reserved and quoted separately.
